I accidentally moved Show Desktop to My Documents.

Assuming that it was merely a shortcut I tried to move it back, but it
seems to have been the actual file!

I now see to have the 'real' Show Desktop in My Documents and a shortcut
in the Quick Launch area, and I don't know where the proper place is
the the Show Desktop file so that I can move it back where it came from.

What is the best way to rectify the situation?

The file is a Windows Explorer command.  It should be in the user's
....\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ folder.  Example:

C:\Documents and Settings\Herbert Eppel\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Herbert,

You can either copy it back as John John suggested or re-create it by

Copy it (not its shortcut) back to
   Documents and Settings\your-ID-goes-here\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
