The dvd playback is choppy.  the hardware interupts is using 20% cpu
everytime i play dvds. I think there might be an error in it because i
can't suspend it with the proccess explorer program.

Also IDE channel is set to 'DMA if available'. .This fixed the problem
last time, but now it says it's currently running on PIO mode (not
DMA).  what is DMA and how do i get it?

Sa,

Right-click My Computer | Properties | Hardware tab | Device Manager button.
The link below shows another way to get to Device Manager

For a description of DMA & setting it, visit here:

Thanks Newbie Coder,

I set both primary and secondary IDE channel to "DMA if available".
As a result,   the primary IDE's current transfer mode is  in "ultra
DMA mode"  ,but the secondary IDE is still in "POI mode".

I think the secondary IDE is where the dvds are being played from
because it is still choppy

How can you get the dvds to work from the primary IDE?

Sa,

If you have an ATAPI hard drive & the same for CD or DVD's then this is how
a machine is usually setup

Primary Master = Hard drive
Primary Slave = First CD/DVD (ROM/Writer)

If you have a second CD/DVD then the chances are they are on the 'Secondary
Master' leaving 'Secondary Slave' free

The only way you can change that is to open up the main computer case &
change the cable, but I am not suggesting you do that

When you start your computer it will say 'Detecting Hardware' (or something
similar) & you will see what is on what channel they are on

What colour depth are you using on your computer? What is the memory of the
graphics card? What speed is your processor? What resolution are you using?

These questions will make a difference to the picture from a CD/DVD because
if you have the resolution too high & the graphics card memory is small &
the colour depth is too high there will be so much information for the
graphics card to process that the processor will go mad having to try to
keep up

Please keep me posted
