I am imagining a system in five years time where all the software
running on it has been built on the .Net framework.

Probably not, I cannot image me that, at least the boot software will be
built without that.

I would be at least possible if M'soft would release the .Net Framework for
Linux, Unix, and Mac's but they won't as it would eat into their Windows
Operating System profits.
