Think BEFORE you post.I'm seeing a terribly distubing number of questions that have no purpose
in existing. As an example: How do I change the position of a stream? Hmm.. Could it be some method on the stream itsself? Probably. My advice, pleading advice, is that you USE YOUR DAMN BRAINS before spewing your crap on here. Think about what you are doing. If your question is "How do I do X with class/object Y?" Then why not open up the Obejct Browser and take a look at the properties and methods of Y. I would also advice first try to find a solution yourself, because you'll learn more by searching in answer yourself. I'm not discouraging anyone to post here, because we were all newbies ones, but you'll learn a lot more be searching for an answer yourself then from an instant answer. Sometimes its not until they ask the question - as stuiped as it may be - that regulars like us can put it into context and point them on their way, even if its to say go to google cos its been answered 20 times already. Someone inexperienced may also enjoy answering these repeat problems as a means of building up their own knowledge. I do though sometimes gag when its so darn obvious that a simple search would suffice. Today's programming environments are so out there it's amazing beginners can achieve anything. Object oriented languages are as intuitive as learning Icelandic! When you need to understand the concepts and keywords you want to know about - something of an impasse occurs. This group does not need the OP discouraging people from asking "obvious" questions, or even non-obvious questions; the poster does not know beforehand whether the question is obvious or not. If the OP doesn't like these questions, he doesn't have to answer them. This group has been free of bad attitude for the years I've been using it and I hope it stays that way. This may mean the OP changing his approach. The only advice I would give new posters is to always put the question in context. It's much easier to find the answer that way. Robinson,
Although I agree with Boo, do I agree with you more. I think that there are some obvious guys/girls who are not newbie's but want their code or whatever from a newsgroup. That does not mean that the majority of good guys should suffer from the few bad guys. When I started I have asked the most crazy things which only a fool or somebody very intelligent could answer. I don't remember reading anything about checking with peter , google, and the rest for permission to post. If you are unhappy, go somewhere else. look I didn't want to offend anyone, and I never said you should check with me before posting. All I wanted to say: is that for beginning programmers it shouldn't be a habbit to immediately post a problem if they can't solve it in 2 minutes. And I know most of the people here first try to solve/research the problem themself, and if they realy can't find a answer, they post a question. That's what they call a learning process. And in my opnion that's the best way to learn something new. But every now and then you see some posts with topics from which you know that if the OP would have taken the time to google this ng for 1 minute he would have found the answer. And in my opinion the ng doesn't benefit from these kind of posts. So I hope my point is clear now, I sure as hell don't want to discourage anyone from posting a question. I also wonder why you think I'm unhappy with the ng? I think it's the best place for information/help on vb.net The only thing I meant to do was give some advice to beginning programmers, because I know this approach helped me a lot when learning vb.net. be for not in the end. How many newbies do you even think will read this post? It doesn't appy to them as far as they can see, so they will not even give it a glance. If you think a problem is too dumb to answer, don't answer it. Move on to something more challenging. While I agree that Google is one of my best friends, I alway google before I come to this group simply because it's faster than waiting for answers here. If I can't get an answer there, either because I haven't used the correct key words or I've put it in the wrong context, I'll come here and post and wait. NTL, google once, google twice, google many times using different key words before coming here I do... And, many times, nobody else knows the answer either it seems. An example is my post in this group from 9/26/2006 with a subject line: "VS 2005 & list of installed products." It happened to someone else but nobody seems to know why. What happened to MS' promise of an answer within 48 hours? If you are an MSDN subcriber, you're supposed to be able to reliably get help here but, probably 20%-30% of the time, I get no answer. The positive thing is, that when I do come to the ng's, I usually try to answer some questions if I can, so at least I can add something back. No. The critique came from an experienced programmer.. someone that would indeed know whether I was an idiot or not. I learned. And became less idiotic. The problem here is not my attitude. The problem is the bleeding heart attitude of the people in the know here on this group. You perpetuate the idea that the newbies DESERVE our knowledge.. Knowledge that we spent years.. decades accumulating.. they somehow DESERVE this knowledge because they make a demand for it. Fuk that noise. You want my knowledge, you'll get it (or not) as I see fit to despense it. I would encourage the other wizards among this group to evaluate the road they traveling on their way to becoming a wizard. Many people are not born or educated to be a good teacher or instructor (such as myself :) ), but to the least degree, he/she should understand that and make a better use of his/her time and talents. No question is a stupid question. I have learned and shared many and yet still asking many "stupid" questions just to make sure I really understood the question. If I understood correctly, people come here are volunteers for helping others. If he/she thinks not so willing, why do some gardening works instead of coming here. I tried to point out where might be the sources of simple answers and how to get it "at the end" of help session at the office. Isn't it a better way for "teaching" people for the immediate needs and for problem solving at the same time, and see if they can learn - before jumping to the conclusion? Finally, I really appreciate those who care to spend your time, knowledge, and skills for pure idiots like myself and others with more advanced skills. You may wish to know one thing - This is why US-based newsgroups have much more visitors than any other countries for the same topics established by MS - if you occasionally visited different country-based newsgroups for Europe and Asia. In the end, you also helped this country to maintain one of its core competencies - computer skills.
