SP1 Install - was it successful?

I tried to install SP1, and it appears to have just stopped somewhere part
way through.  It was "collecting information" (for a long time, slow
progress bar) --- then suddenly it stopped.... no indication that either
something went wrong, it completed, or still running in the background.  I
let it sit for another 30 minutes in case it was chugging along with no UI,
which I didn't think likely without as cpu usage stayed near zero as did
disk access.   I opened VS, don't see any immediage noticable difference -
no indication on about screen either.

Does anyone know of a way to confirm it did in fact install sucessfully?

On my machine it took over an hour to install.

I'll guess in this case that my virus scan jumped in at the wrong second, I
bumped the mouse at the wrong time, the planets weren't aligned right or
some such other incident and it just quit on me partway through.

Time to start it again and see if it seems to finish this time.

For anyone interested, - yes it is possible to determine if the service pack
install was successful.  The first time I ran the install, it just ended
with no indication that things went right or wrong or anything.  When I ran
the second time, it completed after a while (no idea how long, started it,
accepted EULA etc. then came back a couple hours later and it was done).

When successfully completed, the install
1: displayed a dialog stating that it had completed.
    2: Asked me to reboot
3a: About screen on laptop without sp installed yet shows: Version
8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
3b: About screen on desktop with sp installed shows: Version
8.0.50727.762 (SP.050727-7600)

Matt,
Its also listed in the VS Help About under the "Installed products" list as
an individual item.

You can also see it in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista)
if you enable the "Show Upgrades" options.

Hope this helps

You have to wonder:

Why in the world didn't MS use the notation SP1 instead of SP.050727-7600 in
order to avoid questions like this?

What is your computer doing at 100% CPU utilization for 20 minutes during
the install process?

My install went through several iterations which I expected.  But there was
never any indication of what the install program was working on at any given
time.  Sometimes separate executions use the same identifying numbers and it
looked like it was looping.  Why wouldn't they give us more information on
what was going on at any given moment?

I got no message at all at the end of the several iterations of the install.
Why wouldn't the install always end with a go / no go message at the end of
the install?

How many wasted hours are programmers spending today trying to determine if
this SP is properly installed?

Took ages ... but it seemed to install OK.
