Blue screen exception when booting??Hi,
My Win2000 system is having problems booting... it get's to the final stage just before the prompt to login and an exception of some kind occurs ( can't tell what it is, it flashes off too quickly) one thing i have noticed is that it says the ...\software\configuration or \configuration\software... some file is corrupt? it doesn't specify the file name just the directory from which it lies?? not quite sure what is going on?? the system then resets itself after <1 sec it's only 6 months old so am hoping it's not hardware related?? Any ideas??? Regards Darryn Darryn
I would always start off by booting in Safe Mode and seeing it you can get it. Secondly, check if you had created the ERD's, boot from your install cd and do a repair. It sounds like the systems configuration files could be corrupt. The system will not boot in safe mode or any mode for that matter and i don't have a ERD... not much more i can do, i tried running chkdsk and it detected errors so i ran the repair mode chkdsk /p /r and it seemed to run ok until 78% then it just restarted?? it would be handy if i could read the error but hey that's MS for YA! If you have time to reinstall, the n utilize it in this way. Perform a parallel installation of windows xp on a different partition or in case of only one partition, install windows xp in a folder different than the previous installation. Boot through the windows xp installation. Assuming your windows 2000 installation folder to be winnt, copy the two files software and system from c:\winnt\system32\config folder to c:\backreg in order to take a backup. Now open the registry editor. Select hkey_local_machine and click on file->load hive. Browse to c:\winnt\system32\config\software and load it as "test". Now select test and click on file->unload hive. Do the same with c:\winnt\system32\config\system. Now, reboot the box and see if the same problem persists or not?
