Hi,

Whenever i type www.microsoft.com in the address bar of IE 6.0, a Network
Password login screen is shown and i cannot access the site with message: "

You are not authorized to view this page."

Same happens with amazon.com and couple of other siter. though, i can access
msdn.microsoft.com

what could be wrong?

any tip / help would be really useful

try this page: http:// microsoft.com

or just do: microsoft.com

one of these combinations should work, but then it again
may say:you are not authorized to use this page, thety are
probably reconstructing the site or they temporarily
took it out of the system or they turned off the web site
until they can see what the problem was or the system
timed out or there was a hardware or software glitch.

or it's there's something wrong with the their server.

either way there's nothing wrong with your computer.

thanks for your work around.

i tried all options but still, there is a same problem. as soon as it gets
any request that points to microsoft.com, it shows login box.

even when i open an e-mail, newsletter from microsoft, it does not show
images because they have microsoft.com in their URL.

any other ideas?

i am able to access microsoft.com from other computer at the same time.
there seems to be no problem with microsoft server.

i do recollect one thing:

once i tried to do telnet login to microsoft.com using anonymous password. i
failed to log on but could this be an issue related to that operation?

Hi Vaibhav,

Just curious, but take a look in any files you find with the name hosts
on your computer and see if they perhaps mention any of the sites you're
having problems with.

I think you'll find your hosts file in a folder along the lines of
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc

Below is what I find when I open my hosts file using Notepad.

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host
127.0.0.1       localhost
