default browser

I want to set internet explorer as default browser.
Which is the best way to do this?
The "standard" way, going to internet options and check the box "internet
explorer should check if it is the default browser" does not work. I check
it, restarted I.E., even restarted the computer, and I.E. never asks to
change it to default browser.
Is there a registry setting that I can change?

It appears that the sole act of posting this message made it so now internet
explorer asked me and now I changed it. Still interested in teh registry key
that controls that, though......

Go into Internet Options in Control Panel

Click the PROGRAMS tab

Check the box that say InterNet Explorer Should Check..., click APPLY & then
click OK
