Hello, I'm working on a laptop that has win2k installed and I have been
unable to log in since I changed the domain to a workgroup.  After I changed
the name and rebooted the system I can't get past the login screen...the
message says that either the password is incorrect or I am trying to connect
to the wrong domain.  I've changed a number of machines in the past so that
I can access them on my network and never had a problem so why now?  The
only thing that is diffirent is that the laptop is normally part of  a large
network and has fairly strict security settings.  The login screen does not
give me the option of selecting a different domain at login.  How do I get
around this problem without reimaging the hard drive?  Is there a command
line program that will allow me to set the domain id back to the original
name?

Thanks,

Mike Riddell

You need to talk to your network administrator and ask him to
re-register your machine on the domain, or to give you a local
login account and password.

By changing the computer from the domain to a workgroup, you have
destroyed the trust between the domain and the machine.  In doing so,
you have also rendered any domain login credentials as invalid.  You
need to be physically connected to the domain network, you need to
have administrative privileges to the workstation, and you need to
have administrative privileges on the domain.  Then you can add the
machine back on to the domain, after having first deleted the
computer's old domain account (unless you've also renamed the
computer).
