Fret not - it has nowt to do with your hardware - it's Norton being unhelpful
yet again.  A simple uninstall of the systemworks software and hey presto the
CD drives will reappear as if they haven't been away.....and that's the
problem they haven't gone anywhere but you just can't do anything with them
while Norton faff around trying to support you through a very traumatic
install.  Sorry but I don't have the solution and am considering returning
the software and finding an alternative - only one problem - what's the
alternative for a Windows 2000 PC that doesn't have all the bells and
whistles of XP?

I just spent an entire day dealing with this exact problem.  After removing
Norton Systemworks (which caused the problem via WinDoctor) and deleting the
Upperfilters setting via regedit (listed elsewhere) The problem turned out to
be aHead InCD, which allowed my CD-R/W to operate like a big floppy drive.
After I removed it everything worked fine, except I can no longer re-install
it without having the problem come back.  And this is after having it work
perfectly for 2 years (AS long as I've had this computer).  I dumped
Systemworks and went with just anti-virus.

Are you using InCD that came with Nero Express 6.6?
