My clients are all over town, and when one of them has this type of question then I ask him to click the WinVNC shortcut on his desktop. This makes his desktop visible on my screen and it gives me immediate control over his mouse and keyboard. The package is WinVNC, and I'm running it in "listening" mode on my PC, in order to protect my client's privacy. WinVNC is free.
