I have a problem with USB storage devices , my memory stick and external (My
Books ) USB storage devices are not working, the drivers appear to have
vanished "Code 28" I have installed all the Windows updates SP4 rollup 1 but
still cant access these devices  . The USB modem and printer still work so
apparently the USB card OK .Please help

Have you tried them on a different PC?

Just because your USB printer still works does not necessarily mean that the
USB ports are fully operative. I have a USB mouse that works perfectly well
on the first USB port but is no longer recognised on the second USB port.
Yet both ports recognise other USB devices. In other words, you might have
an incompatibility that affects just USB storage devices.

Yes they work on other PC .
Its just a simple memory stick I connected it to the PC to work on a
spreadsheet for a couple of hours when I went to save the work the memory
stick  was no longer visible . From Control Panel / device manager I see "
The Drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)" when I click on
Reinstall Drivers I get a message " The installation failed because a
function driver was not specified for this device instance"

I tried this but still not fixed now also have lost driver for RAID
Controller , same error message "drivers are not installed Code 28"
